8-REALES PILLAR VARIANTS
MINT OF LIMA

GENERAL DESIGN CONCEPT :

Obverse : Crowned hemispheres between crowned Pillars of Hercules. Inscription VTRAQUE VNUM (Union of two worlds), with mint marks at 4- & 8-o'clock, and year of mintage at the bottom.
Reverse : Crowned quarter arms of Castile and Leon bearing the Bourbon crest in center, "8" to the right and assayer's initial to the left. Inscription [monarch's name]·D·G·HISPAN·ET IND·REX* ([monarch's name], by the grace of God,
King of Spain and the indies/colonies).

Lima is capital the Vice-Royalty of El Peru. The mint of Lima was also late in adapting the Pillar series. The mint was authorized in 21 Aug 1565 by Philip II. It was badly damaged by earthquakes in 1687 and 1747. It was not until 1752 that the Pillar types were struck.

The coins have silver fineness of .916 (11 dineros). Average coin diameter is 37 mm.

Design Variation Concepts for Lima Mint
YR/YR-M-AM-12C.abc YR - the last two digit of the year appearing on the specimen. There are some cases where YR becomes YR/YR, and these are overstrikes. Example are specimen of 1756/5 overstrike.
M - variation on the dot of the "L" on the monogram LMA mintmark
absent :
means that both dot is present on the LMA
1 :
means that only the right dot is present and left dot is absent
0 :
means that NO dot is present on the LMA mintmark
AM - the assayer mark which appears on the reverse of the coin

1 -the monarch's name appearing at the reverse inscription  (please note that there is NO "-1" variety, since that number is fixedly reserved for PHILIP V's specimens.)
2 : FERDND·VI 3 : CAROLUS·III

leftcrown.jpg (14940 bytes)

2
0 (or none): royal crown at the left pillar 1 : imperial crown at the left pillar
.e - specifies errors or minor die variations compared to the standard mint design

The shift to CAROLUS from FERDND inscription and position shift of the cross ("+") of the crowned crest of Spain from "I+S" to "H+I" on the HISPAN was simultaneous, relative to the transitional specimens of Mexico.
